Getting here

Completed new freeway to the beach

The new freeway to the beach was inaugurated on 24 November 2007. With the latest stretch now opened, it is today possible to drive from all the way from Caracas to the Barlovento coast on "autopista."

Airport bridge nearing completion

The new bridge between Caracas and the coast is making nice progress. The bridge should be completed by June - in time for the South American soccer tournament being held in Venezuela.

Combined with the new freeway to Higuerote, it means that driving time to Isla de Oro will be cut in half. Thanks to the freeway, Isla de Oro is now within commuting distance of the capital.

Transfer, Airport/Caracas to Isla de Oro

If you do not want to rent a car and drive to Isla de Oro yourself, then there are basically two ways to get to Isla de Oro: with a taxi or a with private driver.

Hotels near the airport

If you arrive in Venezuela late - at one of the 10 pm flights - you may want to consider staying overnight before heading out to Isla de Oro the next day.
Here are some of the hotels near the airport.

Driving instructions

Isla de Oro is located near the town of Rio Chico ("Little River") on the Caribbean coast a bit east of Puerto Encantado and Higuerote.
The trip is 79 miles (127 km) from Caracas. Barring exceptional traffic, it usually takes an hour and most of the trip is done on a new freeway.

Car rental companies

This page lists car rental companies in the Caracas-area. Although most of these companies are in Caracas proper, and not in the airport, they will usually be able to provide a vehicle in the Caracas airport. Some of them are also located in the airport or have branches in the airport, and are listed near the end of this page.
